We love Llanidloes…

…so much so that we decided to move here in December 2009. We’ve not been here long but we have to say it’s the most at home we have both felt since leaving our home towns for University nearly 15 years ago! Wikipedia can fill you in on some of the more mundane things about the town but you have to come here to know what we are talking about.

Any town is built on it’s community and we’re lucky to live in, and be a part of, a town with an especially strong sense of community.  Below are a few of the ventures we are involved with in the town at the moment.

Leanne is a volunteer at Great Oak Foods; a fabulous community run, mostly organic, vegetable shop that sells produce from the local area and other organic farms. You can generally find her behind the counter on a Friday afternoon between 1 and 5. Pop in and say hi!

Andy volunteers at the Llanidloes Resource Centre – another community run association. It has several internet-enabled PC’s which are free for anyone to use for 30 minutes a day. It also has one of the cheapest colour printers/photocopiers this side of Shrewsbury. He’s generally there on a Tuesday between 10.30am and 1.45pm, most likely drinking earl grey tea and eating addictive fairtrade ginger biscuits.

In June 2010 we helped launch the Llanidloes Seed Swap, which is based in the resource centre. There is drop off box in the resource centre for any spare seeds you may have, from which people are free to help themselves to any seeds they may need. Llanidloes Seed Swap runs an annual seed swapping event, this year it’s on March 5th. More details here.

We haven’t stopped there though. We want to do everything we can to help make our little part of the world as resilient as possible, without cutting ourselves off from the rest of society – this isn’t about giving it all up and running away to live in the woods. We can all live within the resource limits of our planet without trashing it and still have a great time!
